Beethoven Opera is just a masterpiece, a great history of risk and success. In this new production by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays Florestan, a political prisoner, and Lisa Davidsen, his wife Leonore (disguised as Fidelio), dares to save him. Strong rejection is an ingredient for domestic fraud, strong love, and oppressive chambers of government. The music is transcendent everywhere, and includes a quartet of well-known deeds, a prison choir, and florestans charmed by Law II, a vision of crying in darkness and hope. Tobias Kratzer’s new production combines the dark realities of French revolutionary violence and our own time to illuminate the message of humanity inspired by Fidelios.

Pietro Mascagnis Cavalleria rusticana (Rivalry) and Ruggero Leoncavallos Pagliacci (“Players”) are the most popular double shows in Italy today, but they are written independently. Cavalleria rusticana had its first premiere in 1890, which undoubtedly influenced Leoncavallo. Pallacci in 1892 was another success. Both works, each of which is undeniably a tradition of Welsh realism, have a dramatic lack, a wealth of melody and an obsession with hostile jealousy.

The production of Damiano Michilettos is an Olivier Award-winning hit when it was first premiered in 2015. It puts both Operas in one village, allowing characters from one work to appear in another and provide theatrical realism in today’s world and stay forever. The production was praised at the premiere, and the Financial Times did so in summary on an exciting evening.
